About Aaron Wheeler
Composer | Musician | Producer
UEFA, Lancome, Secret Millionaire, Apple. If you’ve watched any kind of TV advertising, film or series in the last two decades, chances are you’ve heard Aaron Wheeler’s music. He is respected as one of the most prolific and talented media composers in the world of production music.
As well as featuring on numerous media projects, Aaron’s own musical project (under his middle name alias The Laszlo Project) has received critical acclaim from taste-makers such as Jamie Cullum and Giles Peterson, with millions of streams on Spotify and plays on BBC Radio 2, Radio 3 and 6 Music.
Aaron’s fascination with melody and harmony began at the age of eight, coinciding with lessons in his primary instrument: the piano. His early teens were spent in his school’s music room, creating compositions using basic computer software and keyboards.
By his late teens, Aaron was already a prolific professional composer working within the field of production music. His vast catalogue of compositions for the likes of EMI Production Music, Universal and West One spanned many musical genres, including Electronica, Pop, Indie Rock, Classical and World. Aaron’s versatile approach to composition stems in large part from this broad palate of stylistic experience gathered at an early stage of his career.
After a stint as an in-house producer at The Dairy Studios in Brixton, working with a wide variety of artists (and building up a catalogue over 700 published works in production music), Aaron began to develop his own musical character - primarily under the artist name Laszlo (later The Laszlo Project). This led to an artist publishing deal with Mute Song. He founded the Lydian Label in 2010, under which he released three Laszlo albums - with a further EP due in 2021.
Very quickly, Laszlo releases drew critical acclaim from taste-makers such as Jamie Cullum, Giles Peterson, Tom Robinson and Nick Luscombe, resulting in radio coverage from BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio One and BBC 6 Music. As of 2021, The Laszlo Project has had over 1.8 million streams on Spotify alone.
Laszlo’s success led to a natural progression from studio to stage, which birthed another of Aaron’s passion projects - a live manifestation of Laszlo compositions in the form of a band: the Lydian Collective.
Lydian Collective’s live studio sessions on YouTube quickly gained a strong international following, racking up millions of views. Invitations to perform at some of London’s prestigious venues quickly followed, and the band have taken the stage at the likes of the Jazz Cafe, Union Chapel, Royal Festival Hall and Cadogan Hall to name a few. Festival performances at Green Man, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, So What’s Next (Eindhoven NL), Kendal Calling, and London Jazz Festival bolstered the release of the band’s debut album Adventure, released in 2018. A recent highlight included a performance at Cadogan Hall alongside 85-piece Capital Orchestra, where many of Aaron’s compositions were adapted for ensemble. The band’s second studio album is due in 2022.
Concurrently, Aaron founded the studio complex/co-working Lydian Workspace in 2014, in Finsbury Park (London). This has been home to many talented creatives: TV writers, architects, graphic designers, film-makers and composers such as Todd Baker, Michael Price and Isobel Waller-Bridge. 2021 will see the workspace double in size at its location on Wells Terrace.
As a media composer, Aaron’s music has continued to appear on TV programmes, films and advertising campaigns over the years. Notable credits include: Being Human (BBC2), Secret Millionaire (Channel 4), The Big Life Fix (BBC 2), UEFA Champions League Weekly (ITV); as well as the international advertising campaigns for Lancome, Dell PC, Olay, Samsung Galaxy Discovery, and Apple Networks to name just a few.
Aaron has most recently been working closely with Abbey Road Masters, a new production library based in Abbey Road Studios.
